I installed Jinzora, a music organizer/streamer/jukebox application, today. I have some interesting impressions. Quick summary: I’m not going to use it because it’s technically deficient.

Why I love working under Linux

Just a short list in no particular order (everyone’s got ‘em, figured I should as well). Simply trying to share my joy:

No reboots
So far, every peripheral I’ve installed has been a driverless installation
Multitasking actually works
Integrated FTP/SSH/Samba/whathaveyou within the file browser
Wide variety of applications to choose from. All free.

Citrix connection under Linux

So, a few things about using Citrix under Ubuntu:

Don’t use the client linked from your Citrix login page, it’s probably version 7 but the latest is version 10. Go here, instead
You will need Open Motif. Use synaptic to search for ‘motif’. Install limbotif3, libmotif-dev, and motifnls

BTW: Flickr uploadr

For you Linux users: the Windows XP/2000 Flickr upload tool runs under (the latest) Wine reliably and well. Only wrinkle is there doesn’t seem to be drag and drop.. that may just be a setting I need to change, however.

My solution for the nvidia black window bug

NVidia has a known issue with compositing and VRAM exhaustion. This doesn’t manifest under Vista because it (appears to) start using system memory properly.
Under Linux, it reaches a point where VRAM is filled and subsequent window draws end up black or with just decoration. You can duplicate this by running Beryl without the use-copy […]
