In other news: I ordered my Vibram FiveFingers shoes directly from Vibram. Not sure if I’ll actually receive them or not.

1) They are very hard to get, frequently selling out
2) The web form does inventory tracking somehow, to prevent selling size/color combinations that are out of stock (you can’t add it to your cart if it’s out)
3) I tried to add an item to my cart, but found it was out of stock
4) However, the identical piece I added to my cart yesterday was purchasable today

This means either they reserved one for me, which is bad for all the other people who wanted to buy one between yesterday and today — and what happens if I never came back to buy it?
OR, they don’t check inventory at checkout time.

Either way, that’s sort of crappy software design.

Examples: A professional meat slicer is around $1.5k.

Paper products are incredibly cheap in bulk, provided you want 500-1000 units.

There is quite the disparity in pricing on handled mason jars, ranging from $0.90 ea. to $26.00 ea. for the same volume.

Know those noisy ice machines at hotels? It is possible to buy them online. They’re as expensive as a used car.

Got a wild hair, decided to see how far I could virtualize.

Also, for the record Hardy Heron is both awesome and really frustrating. I advise against installing it until they get to a new point version around June. Way too unstable and way too many problems.

Anyway, check this out. I have been tasked with writing a SQL Server database module for Drupal 6. This is not fun. It’s slow, Drupal is written poorly for abstraction, and there are odd idiosyncracies one has to deal with. But that’s not what I want to tell you about.

This is the vargrind output between a semi-working mssql installation and a working mysql installation. That 400 number is the number of queries the MSSQL module needs to do to render the ‘My Account’ page. For comparison, MySQL only requires about 40.

(The reason it’s so high is because one must select the error code to check for an error, then select the code meaning from the database if there was an actual error. For every query.)
