I’ve reached a new milestone in my Linux endeavors. I’m currently running a custom kernel on my laptop — the last ck patch, to be specific.
It actually isn’t that hard if you’re a developer and/or have command line experience. There’s a walkthrough on the wiki. Only snag I had was my Belkin USB wireless card — it’s an RT2570 card, which is very poorly supported. Fortunately, I was able to get it working with Rutil and the serialmonkey drivers.
I’m going to try using this kernel for a bit. Already I noticed a significant userspace speed increase. Applications launch a hell of a lot more quickly, windowing response is snappier, and it just feels like a new computer.
The only wrinkle so far is that, due to the beta nature of the wireless drivers, I may run into issues with things locking up. I’ve already had a couple instances where the keyboard just stops responding. Kind of frustrating.
Anyway, just wanted to pimp my accomplishment and link to the projects.
(Ubuntu users note: I used the kernel and patch linked off Con Kolivia’s page. The kernel image in the Ubuntu repos is unpatchable using the wiki walkthrough that I linked. My patch-fu isn’t strong enough to do selective diffs, alas.)
