Beastmaster and formative moments

January 21st, 2006 · No Comments

I always confuse Rip Torn with Rip Taylor. Not sure why.

The reason I mention this is because I was particularly surprised to find out Rip Torn was a lead in The Beastmaster. I was thinking the confetti guy and was momentarily amused.

Anyway, the image below is seared into my subconscious. Watched the movie again, tonight, and was struck by this sort of visceral reaction when the opening scenes got to the following bit.

I don’t remember how old I was when I saw this, but it was certainly before puberty. I remember this particular scene and that it giving me the willies (still does, in fact). As I recall, I felt particularly uncomfortable and did not know why — the bare legs, pseudo-sexual gyrations, and then the reveal of the trio as horribly deformed women just wreaked havoc with my prepubescent mind. Creeped my shit out.

Lastly, quick review:
Ice Pirates: Not worth paying to rent. I think this was a script that was written by a studio executive’s son. The only good part is the sort of neat time-warp fight scene sequence.

Yellowbeard: Surprisingly good. I’d say it’s on par with the other Python movies actually. Of note is that they really seem fixated on the rape aspect of medieval life, for some reason.
