When I was young I developed this proclivity to refer to ducks, things relating to ducks, or just the word “duck”. I found it sort of amusing, and it was really just an affectation for humor value.

Over the years, however, it’s come around to bite me in the ass. Now I really do enjoy all the aspects of ducks, and what I once said with irony or sarcasm is now sincere. It’s similar to my dad’s story of how he picked up playing the guitar. Initially he learned it so he could compose humorous songs making fun of country and western, “dirty country hurtin’” songs. To his initial chagrin and eventual delight, he found that more and more he enjoyed the songs he was parodying.

Hmm… I wonder if this sort of situation is an unforseen aspect of “you become what you despise”.
