Never been a sports-man

I watched a youtube video the other night in which this meathead looking guy was talking about inspirational athletes. I’m using “meathead*” deliberately. The guy in the video looked fit and like he lifted. And here he’s talking about this kid who was an awesome triathlete, got into an accident, and then worked his way back to the top.

So, the fact that I actually decided to watch this video aside, I had a sudden kind of identity crisis, or switch or something. It’s like, I could totally grok what this guy was saying. He said something along the lines, ‘You know how you want to run or work out but you’re injured so you can’t. You just think about it a lot and it really bums you out”. And I totally empathized with him. I know that feel.

Race thoughts and recap

So I finished my first foot race. I ran a 5k associated with the Seattle Marathon, this morning. It was quite a bit different than I expected

Thought for a moment

I don’t always remember what it was like to be a teenager. Sometimes I get flashes, but you know as an adult you really don’t grok it, you don’t recall exactly what it feels like.

I was reading a post by Dale McGowan in which he describes telling “age stories” to his kids. His daughters pick an age and he tells the a story from his life, so they can know their dad. I like the idea, though it would feel a little narcissistic to me.

Anyway, at the end was a Five for Fighting video. Not a great song, but an okay song. The video triggered a memory of what it actually feels like to be a teenager. It was so visceral, I want to remember it. So ephemeral, I want to capture it here.

Thus a runner was born

I guess I didn’t post my final video, this is it. I finished the Couch to 5k program. It was awesome. I went from 0 to 3.9 miles in a session through this program. This last Sunday I actually ran the first 5 miles of my life.

I heartily recommend this program to anyone. I mean, I’d run a mile or two on a treadmill before, but this is far and away different and more better. Just get out there and do it.

Also, running on hills is really hard.

Mysterons and Navel-gazing

This is what I think about when I listen to “Mysterons” by Portishead. All of it.

The reasons I ditched my Lumia 900 for a 2yo Captivate

I gave Winphone a chance. I really did. I still like the overall UI and ideas for presenting information from the OS. I think it has the potential to be great. But there were too many rough edges for me to be happy with it in the end.

So I switched back to a rooted Captivate running Jelly Bean. And because a friend asked what I found detrimental about Windows Phone, I decided to list them out here, both for myself and for others.

Some observations about video editing

I’ve been shooting and editing video every other day, since I’m video logging the couch to 5k thing. It’s interesting to bend one’s mind to an endeavor one has extremely minimal experience with. I find the whole thing is kind of like still photography, just with an odd twist. Also, I’m learning new things each time I try to put together something interesting.
